Nope

I got a non removable fiberglass cast. Doc said that particular bone needs more protection, but didn't really explain how a removable one offers less, other than the obvious *lack* of protection from not wearing it at all.

Fine

At least it's not as bulky as the splint. Meanwhile, it stays on for a month.  Now since Dec 25 is a holiday, and they said the doctor has the rest of the week off, they tried to schedule the cast removal for Dec 30. I convinced them to pull it up to the 23rd instead.

I am not waking up Christmas morning in a cast.

Stitch free

 Guess what

The stitches come out and I lose this ugly splint. I'm going from the splint to a cast, but since I've never been in a cast before I don't know what to expect, but I'm hopeful that it's at least not bulky.

I'll let you know.

Shut in

My Google location history looks like a guy that lost his phone somewhere in his house and gave up. I'm living on the hope that when these stitches come out of my wrist I'll be able to at least drive again.

This is how you starve an extrovert.

What more?

I went back to the doctor on Wednesday last week because my wrist wasn't getting better - it was getting worse. Some fresh x-rays at different angles revealed that there was in fact a broken bone in there, and it wasn't going to get better on its own. Two days later on the 8th I was in the hospital, first thing in the morning for surgery.

Scaphoid break. They had to dig in there, but them back together, then screw it in place. It took two days before I could really move my arm fully, and the splint stops me from doing just about anything with my dominant hand.

Typing is tricky, but here I am.

I am once again unable to drive or do anything that would involve both arms. I'm out of work until the 26th - and that's right before Thanksgiving anyway. I can't even use a mouse, or hold a game controller. I'm stuck with passive entertainment.

That and I can't bend my wrist at all. I cannot express how much I hate this splint. Not looking forward to the cast I get when the stitches come out.

Sequelitis

We're living in an age where a 30 - 40 year old movie will get dusted off and plied for a sequel. The Indiana Jones movies were over, until they weren't. Top Gun got one. But I'm going to complain about this.

Now, whenever one of these 30 year removed sequels comes around, and I actually let myself watch it, the wife and I will watch the first movie one day, then the new one a day or so later. It helps because the original is fresh in our minds so we can see whatever callbacks and OG cast members carry over.

It's not even a spoiler to say there is exactly one callback to the original movie. One. No cast members, just Dorothy V sitting in a trailer that someone calls old in the first five minutes of the movie, and that's it. No more. You can skip the original and you won't be lost. The only thing they have in common is that they chase tornadoes.

I realize that a director wants to make it their own, but all they did was make a movie about tornado chasers and slap the old title on it, and slather it with loud country music.

Back at it again

So my last visit was this past Thursday. Doc says I'm healing nicely, and everything is where it should be. He also said I could drive, which my wife was very fussy about for the past two weeks.

Rightfully so. Coming off of that concussion was no picnic, and driving with only one arm is a real pain.

But once I got that greenlight, I wasn't going to let myself sit around anymore. Monday morning I was back at the gym - to the surprise of everyone, which surprised me because I wasn't there to tell anyone what happened.

Ok, I told my trainer why I had to postpone our sessions. Makes sense that they talk.

Of course I have a two-pound limit on my right arm, so... leg day, leg day, and (hold on) oh look, more leg day. And left arm day. I can do back extensions. Half of my workout has become a challenge. Meanwhile at work that limit means I can't do... most of my job. I can do paperwork.

Fortunately I'm good at that. But looking at my paperwork, there's so much that needs to be done that I would normally be doing (I like getting my hands dirty), that's not getting done because I can't do it.

Alright - the priority stuff is getting done, but I like being ahead of schedule. Far ahead of schedule. It gives me a cushion that allows for things like getting into accidents and being unable to come in to work for two weeks. But that gap is narrowing, and it's making me antsy. Trouble is, if I try to push myself, I'll probably hurt myself. The last thing I need is a lecture from the eleven women I work with. Because they'll do it.

The big bore

One of my coworkers hosted a Halloween party on Saturday, and while my RSVP status was in limbo, I decided that I wasn't dead and just put on the costume I already had and went.

The party was nice.

Sunday morning my arm was absolutely throbbing when I woke up. You see, if I sit there doing nothing, my arm feels fine. When it feels fine, I think I can do things. When I do things, it stops feeling fine, but the feeling gets worse the longer I was doing things. It's a delayed response. I more or less held my arm in reserve, not using it for much of anything, but apparently just holding it up so it didn't dangle uselessly was bad enough. Sunday afternoon, it felt better. So I tried baking.

All I did was fill the bread maker and hit the button.

Woke up Monday morning with an equally proportionate amount of pain. So on Monday, I didn't do a single stupid thing. I stared at YouTube and Netflix while I lay there eating and hating it.

This morning, I didn't feel any pain in my arm at all. I took it as a sign and decided to do nothing.
